Here’s to a fresh start and to starting over anew in 2025

To be specific, here’s francesmariel.com — version 2.0

…as it is certainly not my first rodeo in publishing my works through a digital portfolio on my own website.

Due to a payment issue with the host, my website/domain was taken down/suspended, but even after I had resolved the issue with the payment method, I was unable to restore the site back to how it was originally as there were no backups. It never really crossed my mind back then that I had to manually save backups, but in the end that’s still all on me. My bad.

And to be fair, I also did procrastinate for quite a long time before finally turning on my surface pro after what feels like forever just to deal with the whole payment issue. It might not have even come to this if I had just dealt with it right away.

Eh…could’ve, should’ve, would’ve. What’s done is done and so here we are.

On the bright side, the good thing to take away from all of this is that I had actually been wanting to change my portfolio website for awhile now as I wanted it to be a little more straightforward and easier to navigate and that I was a bit overly ambitious with what I wanted to include in my website back then. I think it had something to do with the mindset that since I was paying for it, I thought I should milk it for what it’s worth and throw everything into it.

As a side note, I also think I might’ve chosen the wrong theme to begin with as I had to pay for the pro-version just to add small changes in order to tailor it to my needs. Strike 2(?) for me.

And I really should–in general–cut it out with all the impulsive monetary subscriptions that I have a bad habit of indulging in for things that I may end up not even using or fully utilising. It’s one of the modern day pitfalls of just entering adulthood and having our very own credit cards, I guess.

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Extra reminder for myself: I am not a rich person. Things may cost very little on their own, but it quickly adds up when you put them all together.

So, all things considered, having everything wiped clean actually gave me a bit of a relief. It’s a blank slate. I can cancel all those subscriptions as I am not using them in anyway right now. I can rethink how I want to put this website together, without having to rely on paid subscriptions.

A new perspective. Out with the old, in with the new.

The only real downside to having to start over from scratch has more to do with losing all the content I put into the website and losing all the little touches of tweaking things here and there to arrange how I wanted everything to look.

All that effort, down the drain.

Thankfully(?), the wordpress app on my phone seems to be stuck in the dark ages and actually had almost everything frozen in place. There’s an error when you try to view any of the pictures and other visual media, but I was at least able to retrieve the text.

What’s good about the text? Well, one of the little gripes I had when making my website was having to write all these little descriptions all over the website. I may not use all of them this time around, but it’s good to know I’ve already got something to use when I’m stumped.

So it may seem to have been a bad situation, but as the saying goes, every cloud has its silver lining.

And I still don’t know how clouds even having silver linings.

Ok, I just looked it up. Apparently, the silver lining referred to the light shining through the edge of a cloud.

I mean, I personally wouldn’t think of that as silver, but it still makes for very pretty-sounding expression.
